Ages 14-15 | instructor in training at bear den mountain
The Shadow Program, which operates from Bear Den Mountain at Whiteface, is for those individuals ages 14-15 years old that are interested in learning to be a ski or snowboard instructor. In return for their help with the children's ski or snowboard group lessons, the program offers participants the opportunity to improve their own personal skiing and riding skills while learning the technical applications of teaching the sport.
Each program participant volunteers 20-25 days over the season. Their duties include helping 3-12 year old students get ready for their lesson. They help with the 1.5- to 2-hour lessons out on the hill—riding the chairlifts, keeping the groups together and supporting the instructor with the lesson. Once the lesson is finished, Shadow Program participants help return the children to the indoor play part of their program. The lessons go out twice daily.
Over the course of the season, Shadow Program participants volunteer between 50-180 hours of their time depending on their commitment. The Shadow Program is a vital part of the Snowsports Program at Whiteface! Many of the participants in the Shadow Program become instructors when they turn 16 years old.
