Congratulations to all 2010 Olympians

As part of our mission, we maintain the venues from the 1980 Olympic Winter Games and provide one of the best training facilities around the world for winter athletes — summer sports too! All together, 12 Olympic Region athletes competed in Vancouver — making up 5% of the U.S. Olympic Team.  

This year we sponsored six athletes and supported their dreams of going to the Olympics.  We are so proud of their accomplishments and thrilled to have helped them achieve their goals. Both Andrew Weibrecht and Billy Demong claimed spots on the podium with their amazing performances. Andrew Weibrecht won a Bronze in Super G, while Billy Demong took home both a Silver (Team Event) and Gold (Individual Large Hill) to set an American record!

Tax Check Off & License Plate project:

U.S. athletes are once again training in Lake Placid and have their eye on the Olympic Games. In assisting our athletes to achieve their goals, the Olympic Regional Development Authority reminds state taxpayers that they can aid the cause in two ways. One may use the tax check-off located on line 54 of the New York income tax return and purchase license plates featuring the distinctive Olympic rings that proclaim "Olympic Spirit" and "USA".

The late Senator Ronald Stafford drafted the legislation in 1995, known as the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center Fund, that incorporates the $5 check-off and distinctive license plate programs. That effort officially began with a 1996 announcement by the Governor in conjunction with the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Since its inception, over $640,000 has been raised from the program to rehabilitate the bobsled push track, secure biathlon targets from the Nagano Olympic organizers, install a new jump at the freestyle skiing complex, place lights along the bobsled, luge and skeleton track, construct a locker for the USA women's hockey team, maintain the refrigeration system at the Lake Placid Olympic Center and other projects.

"All of these improvements are essential to the success of our teams," said ORDA President and CEO Ted Blazer. "Thanks to the largesse of New York's citizens, we have been able to provide the best facilities possible. This must continue if our teams are to be as successful as they were in Utah."
