Lessons & Programs

Bringing the family to Whiteface? Make Bear Den Lodge your first stop. With nearby parking and one-stop shopping for lift tickets, lessons and rentals, we make it easy for everyone in the family to enjoy a great day at the mountain. The Bunny Hutch chair lift connects Bear Den Mountain to the rest of the Whiteface Mountain, and a shuttle service runs all day between the newly constructed Bear Den Mountain Lodge and the Main Base Lodge. 

Helmet Policy

Children ages 12 and under participating in Whiteface Snowsports School programs are required to wear helmets. All rental packages include helmets.  For more information on helmet safety visit Lids on Kids.

Group Lessons & Programs Overview

At the Whiteface Snowsports School we've got something for everyone, from the non-skiing little ones to the budding powder hounds! Below you'll find an overview of all of our Group Lessons & Programs for kids ages 14 and under. Please note that we also offer Private Lessons for all ages and abilities starting at Bear Den Mountain Lodge and the Main Base Lodge.

Cub Camp Nursery 1 - 6 A friendly and fun place for young, non-skiing children to play, relax and make friends. Half and Full Day programs are available, as well as Season Passes for 2016-2017.
Play-n-Ski 4 - 6 For kids who want to be outside skiing and having fun, the Play-n-Ski program combines ski lessons with indoor play time for all skiing ability levels. Half and Full Day programs are available, as well as Season Passes for 2016-2017.  
Riglet Park 4 - 6  A combination of snowboarding lessons and indoor play time for beginner snowboarders. Half and Full Day programs available. 
Future Medalist 4 - 6  An introductory skiing-only program for beginner to intermediate skiers, dedicated to helping children find success and enjoyment in skiing. Program schedule is 10 consecutive Sunday afternoon lessons; Season Passes available now for 2016-2017. 
Junior Adventure 7 - 12 Program offers skiing and snowboarding lessons for all ability levels, focusing on developing fundamentals and a lifelong affection for mountain sports. Children grouped according to ability. Half and Full Day Programs available. 
Cloudsplitter Club 7 - 14  A weekend program for skiers and riders of all abilities, where participants join our coaching staff in exploring new terrain, developing skills, making new friends and having lots of fun! Season Passes available now for 2016-2017.

Cub Camp Nursery

Ages 1-6 | Non-skiing

The Cub Camp Nursery is a friendly and fun place for young, non-skiing children to play, relax and make friends. Kids participate in supervised activities such as arts and crafts, games and sing-a-longs. They can choose from a large selection of toys and books or curl up to watch a movie. Please note that Cub Camp Nursery participants must be able to walk. 

Schedule

  • Half Day Morning Session: children must be picked up by 12:00 pm
  • Half Day Afternoon and Full Day Sessions: children must be picked up no later than 4:00 pm

Play-n-Ski

Ages 4-6 | Skiing (all abilities)

If your children want to be outside skiing and having fun, this is the program for them! Grouped according to ability, children in the Play-n-Ski program will enjoy a combination of ski lessons and indoor play time. All children participating in Play-n-Ski programs must be out of diapers.

Schedule

  • Registration: Morning and Full Day programs - 8:30 - 9:30 am (8:15 - 9:15 am on weekends & holidays); Afternoon programs - 12:30 - 1:00 pm
    • Child must be present by 9:30 am for Morning Programs, and 1:00 pm for Afternoon Programs
  • Ski lessons: 10:00 - 11:30 am & 1:30 - 3:00 pm (children will enjoy supervised indoor play time before and after lessons)
  • Lunch break: 11:30 am - 1:30 pm (for children participating in Full Day programs)
  • Pick-up times: Morning programs - 11:30 am - 12:00 pm; Afternoon & Full Day programs - 3:00 - 4:00 pm

Riglet Park

Ages 4-6 | Snowboarding (beginners)

Whiteface has teamed up with Burton Snowboards to create Riglet Park for beginner snowboarders ages 4-6. Riglet Park has extra small terrain park features which, coupled with the latest teaching techniques, dramatically changes the dynamic of the snowboard lesson and opens up more possibilities for younger riders than ever before. With fun rolling terrain and features, younger snowboarders will have the opportunity to test their balance and try some new things in a special area designed just for them. Please note: Riglet Park participants must be completely toilet trained and out of diapers and pull-ups to participate in this program.

Future Medalist

Ages 4-6 | Skiing (beginner to intermediate)

Nothing builds skills like repeated, consistent practice. The Future Medalist program is an introductory skiing-only program for beginner to intermediate levels. Our program coaches are specially trained and committed to helping children find success and enjoyment in skiing!

Junior Adventure

Ages 7-12 | Skiing & snowboarding (all abilities)

The earlier kids start skiing and snowboarding, the better. At Whiteface, Junior Adventures participants will learn in a fun setting and gain a lifelong affection for mountain sports, with a focus on developing fundamentals and improving in a non-competitive environment. Children will be grouped according to ability.

  • Registration: Morning and Full Day programs - 8:30 - 9:30 am (8:15 - 9:15 am on weekends & holidays); Afternoon programs - 12:15 - 12:45 pm
  • Ski & snowboard lessons: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm & 1:30 - 3:00 pm (children will enjoy supervised indoor play time before and after lessons)
  • Lunch break: 12:00 - 1:00 pm (for children participating in Full Day programs)
  • Pick-up times: Morning programs - 12:00 pm; Afternoon & Full Day programs - 3:00 - 4:00 pm

Cloudsplitter Club

Ages 7-14 | Skiing & snowboarding (all abilities)

Make skiing and riding friends that will last a lifetime. Our coaches will guide participants into new terrain and demonstrate the skills necessary to ski and ride on big mountains. The Clousplitter Club program focuses on fun and learning while getting in lots of turns in a non-competitive environment. Our coaches are highly experienced and dedicated to helping you find success in skiing or snowboarding.

Schedule

  • Saturdays: 8:30 am - 3:00 pm (lunch break from 11:30 am - 12:00 pm)
  • Sundays: 8:30 am - 12:00 pm (no lunch provided)
  • During Holiday Periods: Sundays from 8:30 am - 3:00 pm (lunch provided) and Mondays 8:30 am - 12:00 pm (no lunch provided)
  • Cloudsplitter Club members will meet at 8:30 am at the Cloudsplitter Club Cabin at Bear Den Mountain

To ensure that your child has the best experience possible at Whiteface, please use the following important information in preparing for your visit to the mountain! As always, feel free to contact us with any questions at (518) 946-2223 (ext. 410). 

Important Notes for Parents

  • Children ages 12 and under participating in Whiteface Snowsports School programs are required to wear helmets. All rental packages include helmets.
  • Please plan accordingly and allow adequate time for rentals, registration paperwork and check-in. Late arrival and check-in may result in denial of enrollment into the program for that day.
  • Kids Lesson & Program times may include organization time, rest periods, cold weather breaks, and/or play time, depending on the needs of the group. If a child refuses to participate in the program, the child will be allowed to remain indoors or a parent will be contacted.
  • You will receive a numbered tag that corresponds with the number your child is assigned. You must present the tag when you pick up your child. It is your responsibility to give the tag to whoever is going to pick up your child. If the tag is lost, children will only be released to their legal guardian with proper photo ID.
  • All children's programs have been structured according to age-appropriate activities. Please do not try to place your child in a program that is not designed for his/her age group.
  • Please evaluate your child's skiing or snowboarding skills realistically, and remember that Whiteface offers many terrain challenges. If your child is unable to perform at his/her lesson or program level, Whiteface staff reserves the right to move your child to the more appropriate group.
  • Please notify Whiteface Bear Den Mountain staff regarding any special needs your child may have, including food allergies, dislikes, and any physical or medical considerations. Please detail all information on registration forms.
  • Whiteface staff will not administer medications. If your child requires medication during the time he/she is at Bear Den Lodge, it is the parent's responsibility to administer the medication.
  • A parent must remain at the mountain if a child is enrolled in any Bear Den Mountain lessons or programs.
  • Should an emergency arise, parents' names will be put on the chalkboards at the base of every lift, and announcements will be made regularly. For our Play-n-Ski Program (ages 4-6), parents will be issued a pager for emergency purposes.
  • Children in the Junior Adventure program (ages 7-12) may need to ride chairlifts with other members of the skiing public, Whiteface staff or with other children in their group.
  • Children in the Play-n-Ski program (ages 4-6) are required to ride chairlifts with an adult. In order to accommodate group lessons, children may need to ride chairlifts with other members of the skiing public.
  • All children must be picked up no later then 4:00 pm from all programs.
  • Refer to our Mountain Checklist (below) to ensure your child has appropriate clothing for the day.
  • Please be advised, cell phone service is limited on the mountain.
  • Children must be at least 1 year old and walking to be enrolled in Cub Camp Nursery. Parents will be issued a pager for emergency purposes.
  • Proof of your child's age may be required upon check-in. Please label all belongings.
  • To make sure your child's day starts out right, bring their boots inside at night to dry out and warm up.
